Geocoding

A map of Brevard County, Florida with all of the schools marked. Everything from Elementary Schools to Universities is located. Using Excel and GIS through a process called Geocoding, I was able to take the raw data provided by the US Census and Florida Department of Education and turn it into usable and cleaned files ripe for the program's use. I personally love Excel, which admittedly is a weird thing to say, but it was calming and refreshing to use a service I'm already so acquainted with. I even learned some new tricks which I'm excited to use elsewhere.

Wow! It's Campsites... or something! So cool! I have no idea what it means, but who cares, I'm going to bed.

Everyone always tells me not to procrastinate, but by god I can't help it, my brain will seriously rather blank out and stare forward instead of doing schoolwork and only the glooming threat of a fast approaching deadline is enough to kick it into gear. Sadly my procrastination meant I didn't even read ahead on what this lab would hold, so mark my surprise when it had two parts which had me actually leaving my house after dark to take pictures of stop signs. I actually had a lot of fun, legitimately this was my favorite lab so far, too bad it was only half of the work load. Here's to future labs which I'll actually be able to fully complete on time, or not, this is kind of a decade old problem for me.

Today in lab, we used the ArcGIS Pro software to build a map of Escambia county, highlighting the rivers, cities, and roads nearest to the UWF Campus. I will not lie, scrolling through all that metadata was mind-numbing, and I did slam my head against the table at least once as my eyes blurred from staring at so many words and numbers I could barely recognize, but once I got into the swing of things it was just a matter of following the guide and creating the map. The whole process took me a good five hours, but admittedly that was mostly because I messed up at the start of the lab and copied the wrong cartography folder. Luckily the Lab Assistants helped me get back on track.

A Wonderful Map of the World

A simple map of countries and cities I created using the ArcGIS Pro on ArgoApps. While the initial set up was confusing and stressful, once I got into rhythm it was very easy and user friendly. I'm excited to see what we will do with the application i the future.
